"Are you a cosmetic dentist?" "This doctor we know is in to smile designing and..." "do you also do aesthetic dentistry?"are familiar lines heard by us when conversing with lay people. Well - FYI - almost everything we do is aesthetic and cosmetic... dentistry by nature demands it and so do more and more patients.   Sharing a case done a few years ago... we may have posted it earlier - but this is a fresh look with some new pictures. 

When we fix up the front teeth most people would call that a "smile design" or "aesthetic" "cosmetic" dentistry...  Truth is that while the front teeth are important for how you look it is the whole mouth that we seek to treat and correct in order to maximize not just the cosmetic aspect but also the functional aspect - your teeth allow you to chew. And if one eats well - one stays healthy! In this particular case, while we were able to make things 'look' better... the primary reason to undertake treatment was so that the patient stopped breaking her teeth (they were fracturing repeatedly) and also to stop the sensitivity she experienced.

Implants are not just excellent options for replacing a single missing tooth, but also for multiple missing teeth. In this case the patient has lost two permanent molars. This means that effectively there is no chewing or bite on one entire side of the mouth.  A fixed bridge or FPD is not possible in this case as there is no tooth at the back to support a bridge. Implants to the rescue!

Often as a patient you may have existing teeth and crowns done ages ago. But there is danger that lurks below. Old crowns may have leaking margins, decay under the caps and the structural integrity so badly compromised that there is no future for that tooth! Often the only option left is to remove the badly broken teeth and replace with implants.  The below pictures are a brief description of a case that was completed in a similar manner. Patients are happy because we are able to provide a "fixed" solution... even though teeth are lost. This case once again underlines the importance of routine regular check ups with your dentist and a thorough evaluation of existing dentition. The earlier a compromised case is detected, evaluated and corrected - the easier it is for us to fix it.

If a tooth fails - and cannot be saved (by a filling or root canal therapy) how does one get a replacement? A dental (endosseous) implant is an increasingly predictable treatment.
