Simple cavities are the ones that need attention. They are the small spaces where the tooth is breaking down or undergoin g decay. A filling today can save the tooth from needing a root canal tomorrow!

 A cavity or tooth decay is one of the most common things to go wrong with your teeth. Usually a person comes to know of a 'hole' when it starts hurting or paining. By then the cavity is too big and needs a root canal to treat the nerve of the tooth.  A routine check up done every year may help to detect decay before it gets too big. And we can avoid a root canal with a simple filling. 

Often a cavity can be really large - but you may not experience any pain or any swelling. This is because there may be no active bacterial contamination (often because the cavity progressed very slowly over a long period of time) This does not mean that the tooth does not need to be saved!  A young patient with trauma (accident) to his upper front tooth came in with pain. He had also chipped the other front tooth many years ago. The pain was because he had broken the tooth at a level that exposed the nerve tissue.
