Often a cavity can be really large - but you may not experience any pain or any swelling. This is because there may be no active bacterial contamination (often because the cavity progressed very slowly over a long period of time)

This does not mean that the tooth does not need to be saved! A root canal can take care of future infections and we can hope to save the tooth for the next few years at least.
